IEBC Launches 30-Day Voter Registration Drive

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced a 30-day Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise set to begin on Monday, March 30, 2026.

The nationwide drive will run daily until April 28, aiming to increase voter registration and make the process more accessible to eligible Kenyans.

IEBC said the exercise will be conducted in various locations, including ward centres, universities and colleges, Huduma Centres, constituency offices, and the Customer Experience Centre at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi.

The commission noted that the initiative is part of broader efforts to promote inclusive participation and strengthen democracy.

However, IEBC clarified that the registration will not take place in areas where by-elections are scheduled or where election petitions are ongoing.

The announcement comes amid growing public interest in voter registration ahead of the 2027 General Election, with increased civic engagement, particularly among young people.

A youth-led movement dubbed “niko kadi” has been gaining traction across social media platforms and public spaces, encouraging voter registration.

The campaign, launched in February 2026 by young activists, has helped raise awareness, though data shows older voters are still registering in higher numbers.

IEBC Commissioner Alutalala Mukhwana revealed that individuals aged above 35 account for the majority of new registrations, making up about two-thirds of the total.

Younger voters, especially those aged 18 to 20, have registered in lower numbers, with factors such as delays in obtaining national IDs, limited civic awareness, and skepticism about the electoral process cited as key challenges.
