Hope Returns to Makueni as Farmers Gear Up for Long-Awaited Rains

As clouds gather over Makueni hills, a quiet sense of urgency fills the air. Across Kenya’s rural villages, farmers are preparing their fields all in anticipation of the long awaited rains.

For many, this season represents more than just rainfall, it’s a chance to rebuild after months of heat and uncertainty.

“You can’t wait for the first drop to start working,”says Josephart Muli a maize farmer from Mbooni.”By then, it’s already too late.”

They have decided to shift their energy and focus to the farm during this period so as to produce enough food. It has been thought that the lower eastern is mostly affected by drought, which farmers say it is as a result of poor timing and preparation to face the rainy season.

“Many people claim we are in dry areas which is true but we can provide enough food,” says Geoffrey mutiso one of the farmers “you just need preparing your farm in time.”

The farmers have requested the government to provide them with herbicide in good time so that they can be amble to fight the pestsides affect their crops.

” If the government provides herbicide to us in good time we shall prevent our crops from pests,” says Joyce Mutua ” In this case we will harvest good yields and of high quality.”
