These unauthorized connections have been linked to several fire outbreaks that have destroyed homes and caused fatalities.

“I have urged Parliament’s Budget and Appropriations Committee to allocate KSh500 million to fix illegal power connections that sometimes lead to fires in Nairobi,” the President stated on Sunday while consoling victims of a recent fire in Kibera that claimed three lives.

During his visit, President Ruto donated food and mattresses to affected residents and pledged that the government would cover medical expenses for the victims. He attended a church service at the Africa Inland Church in Kibera alongside Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

The President also announced plans to donate land for a new fire station in Kibera, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to improving living conditions in Nairobi, which he described as currently unsustainable.

Through the Affordable Housing Programme, about 60,000 housing units are under construction in Nairobi County, with 25,000 located in Kibra and Lang’ata constituencies.

“Our Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda is yielding results, with many low-income families moving into decent homes,” he said.

Last week, President Ruto handed over keys to 1,080 new homeowners at the New Mukuru Housing Estate, where over 13,200 houses are still being built.

The government has also earmarked KSh2.1 billion for road improvements in the city.

On education, the President revealed plans to upgrade school infrastructure, including the building of thousands of new classrooms. He personally pledged to fund the construction of 240 classrooms in Nairobi County, stressing that every child deserves a good learning environment.

Additionally, 24,000 new teachers will be hired in the next financial year, supplementing the 76,000 teachers recruited in the past two years.

Regarding environmental efforts, the Nairobi River Basin Regeneration programme, which currently employs 20,000 youths to clean the city’s three rivers, will soon expand to include over 50,000 participants.

President Ruto encouraged Kenyans to register with the Social Health Authority, highlighting that access to quality healthcare is a constitutional right for all, not just the wealthy.

“Empowering the disadvantaged to achieve equity is not injustice to those who are better off,” he remarked.

He reaffirmed his commitment to promoting national unity and stated that the inclusive government will accelerate development.

The event was attended by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, Members of Parliament, MCAs, and other officials.
