Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe took center stage at the launch of the celebration of the Day of the African Child, held at Ithookwe Primary School in Kitui Central Sub County on Sunday.

In his impassioned address, Governor Malombe reaffirmed the significance of education as a fundamental right, describing it as a guiding light that paves the way for progress, empowerment, and transformation.

“Education remains a fundamental right and a beacon that illuminates the path towards progress, empowerment, and transformation,” he remarked.

The Governor urged all stakeholders to redouble their efforts to ensure that every child, irrespective of their background, has access to quality education. “Africa’s children are our greatest asset. Their dreams, aspirations, and boundless potential are the building blocks of our continent’s future,” he emphasized.

Dr. Malombe outlined the strides made by the county in supporting learners, including the construction of Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) classrooms, recruitment of teachers, provision of learning materials, and the implementation of pro-poor bursary support, all aligned with his comprehensive development plan.

Addressing the gathering, Bartholomew Lumbasi, the Director of Policy and Partnerships in the Ministry of Education, representing CS Machogu, stressed the significance of the day in prompting African states to reflect on opportunities and tackle challenges hindering the realization of children’s rights across the continent.

The ceremony, which aimed to commemorate the Soweto children’s uprising of 1976 in South Africa, drew the presence of notable leaders, including Kitui Central MP Dr. Makali Mulu, underscoring the collective commitment towards advancing the rights and welfare of African children.

The celebration served as a poignant reminder of the ongoing imperative to prioritize education as a cornerstone of sustainable development and a catalyst for socio-economic progress across Africa.
