The government has issued a cautionary advisory to schools nationwide, urging them not to resume operations amidst the flood emergency triggered by the ongoing heavy rainfall.
In an appearance on the Hot 96 Breakfast show, government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura emphasized the importance of school administrators adhering to President William Ruto’s directive.

President Ruto instructed the Ministry of Education to postpone the reopening of all schools “until further notice,” citing the likelihood of the situation worsening in the upcoming days.
Initially slated for April 29, 2024, the reopening date was subsequently rescheduled to May 6, 2024, due to disruptions caused by the heavy rains.

“The Ministry of Education has been directed to delay the reopening of all schools nationwide for the second term until further notice,” declared Ruto on Friday.

Mwaura underscored that disciplinary measures will be enforced against any violators of these directives, asserting that they will face legal consequences. He raised a critical question, stating,
“Some of these schools are currently serving as rescue centers. So, upon reopening, where do they anticipate the relocated members of the public to go?”

Furthermore, he elaborated on the government’s efforts to coordinate the relocation and evacuation of affected individuals, aiming to provide temporary shelter for those displaced by the floods.
