The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has strongly criticized Senate Speaker Amason Kingi for declaring Senator Gloria Orwoba’s seat vacant. The party described the move as hasty and unwarranted.

DCP also condemned Orwoba’s expulsion from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), calling it a clear example of political intolerance and a threat to democratic freedoms in Kenya.
The party pointed out that Kingi’s action came despite a standing court order against such a decision, warning that this undermines the rule of law and signals a troubling erosion of democratic space.
“The Speaker’s decision, made in defiance of an active court order, sets a dangerous precedent,” the party stated in a press release on Wednesday, May 22, 2025.
Positioning itself as a true defender of democratic principles, DCP accused UDA of hypocrisy, claiming the party’s actions reveal autocratic tendencies despite its democratic rhetoric.
“We don’t just talk about democracy — we uphold and defend it,” the statement read.
DCP argued that Senator Orwoba’s removal reflects a growing intolerance for differing opinions. The party noted that her attendance at a community event in Kisii County — which included leaders from various political backgrounds and was meant to welcome former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i — was unfairly used against her.
“That event was about unity, not betrayal,” DCP said, rejecting claims that the senator acted disloyally.
DCP also praised Orwoba for challenging Foreign Affairs CS Alfred Mutua over the overseas job program, describing her actions as courageous and in the public interest.
“This is what true leadership entails — holding those in power accountable.”
Calling her a champion for girls’ rights, justice, and dignity, the party expressed unwavering support for Orwoba and reaffirmed its dedication to defending every Kenyan’s constitutional rights.

“She is not alone. DCP stands firmly behind her and will continue to defend the right of every citizen to speak out and engage freely,” the statement concluded.
Orwoba was expelled from UDA for alleged gross misconduct, and Speaker Kingi declared her Senate seat vacant on May 22, 2025. However, she has since secured court orders halting the enforcement of her expulsion.
