Sports Kenya, the state agency overseeing the venue, revoked a previously confirmed booking, citing existing reservations by sports teams and upcoming preparations for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
In a letter dated May 21, Sports Kenya stated:
“We regret to inform you that the venue will not be available due to prior bookings by sports teams. We are also not taking further bookings due to preparations for the upcoming CHAN 2025 tournament to be hosted at the complex.”
In response, DCP Secretary General Hezron Obaga condemned the cancellation, calling it a blow to democratic freedoms and alleging political interference. He referenced disruptions during the party’s recent events in Nairobi and Kakamega, where police allegedly harassed party leaders and members.
Obaga insisted that the indoor arena is a public facility meant for all Kenyans and accused the government of deliberately frustrating the party’s launch efforts.
Due to the revocation, DCP announced it would postpone the launch and seek a private venue for the event.
“We regret to inform our members and supporters that the June 3, 2025 launch has been postponed. We are in the process of securing a new venue and will communicate the new date soon,” the party said.
The party claims Sports Kenya had originally advised them to reschedule their event from June 4 to June 3 and had issued an invoice for Ksh 3.7 million to confirm the booking.
However, the booking was abruptly cancelled on May 21, with Sports Kenya stating that the venue would not be available on any near-future date.
