Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized the government over allegations that it sent former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga to disrupt a prayer session led by his wife, Dorcas Rigathi.
On his X account, Gachagua accused the government of causing unnecessary chaos during the event at Kamukunji stadium in Nyeri.
He stated, “Deploying the leader of an outlawed criminal gang and his associates to interrupt peaceful prayers and defile the altar is the lowest any government can go, regardless of how desperate they may be.”
The incident at Kamukunji stadium in Nyeri on Saturday saw Maina Njenga and his group of youths interrupting the prayer session, forcing speakers at the podium to cut their speeches short.
Leaders present, including Nyeri Deputy Governor Waroe Kinaniri and former second lady Dorcas Gachagua, quickly left amid fears of retaliation from the youths. Members of the congregation, mostly women, also left as tension rose, with Njenga and his group chanting victory songs.
Despite the disturbance, the prayers continued, with some youths kneeling and seeking God’s forgiveness.
In his message, the self-proclaimed high priest of the Akorino sect urged Kenyans to repent, warning that failure to do so would lead to chaos in the county.
This incident follows rising political tensions in the Mt. Kenya region after Gachagua’s impeachment. He has since launched attacks on the government and President William Ruto, urging the region’s residents to be cautious in the 2027 General Election.
