The series of unfortunate helicopter accidents involving KDF (Kenya Defence Forces) in Kenya’s recent history, including the tragic crash near the border of West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet which claimed the lives of high-ranking military personnel such as Chief of Defence Forces Francis Ogolla, is not an isolated occurrence.
Similar events have occurred across the country in recent times. In November 2023, Wajir County witnessed two separate incidents. One involved a military helicopter crashing during take-off in Buna, Wajir North, while another civilian chopper went down at Wajir International Airport while en route to Arbajahan to deliver exam materials. Both accidents resulted in injuries and happened within a minute of take-off.
Earlier that same month, two KDF pilots were hospitalized after their helicopter crashed in the Kisamis area, Kajiado West. This incident followed another on November 9, where a Kenya Air Force Fennec helicopter struck a power cable en route to Nairobi.
In July 2023, a helicopter crashed in Chemolingot Stadium, Baringo County, carrying officials accompanying Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on a security tour. Despite the helicopter hitting a tree during take-off, all onboard, including government officials, escaped unharmed.
In June 2021, a military chopper on a routine training mission crashed in Kajiado, resulting in the loss of at least 10 KDF soldiers. Before the crash, the helicopter circled for over 20 minutes as those aboard attempted to evacuate.
These incidents involving military helicopters have raised concerns about the safety, maintenance, and operational standards of such aircraft.
