In a devastating incident on Saturday morning, at least two individuals lost their lives while 10 others sustained serious injuries following a collision involving a bus. The accident occurred at Muguga area in Kikuyu, Kiambu County.
Authorities attribute the accident, which involved a 62-seater bus owned by Eldoret Express Company, to poor visibility compounded by adverse weather conditions. The bus collided with a stationary fuel tanker around 5:30 am, according to Ronald Kirui, the Kikuyu Police Commander.
Kirui reported two fatalities and disclosed that more than ten injured passengers were promptly transported to Kikuyu Hospital for urgent medical attention. The bodies of the deceased were transferred to Thogoto hospital mortuary, while the wreckage of the vehicles was relocated to Kikuyu Police Station.
An investigation has been initiated by traffic police to determine the exact cause of the tragic accident. The collision resulted in significant traffic congestion, prompting motorists en route to Nairobi to seek alternative routes through Muguga villages, rejoining the highway at Kinoo.
Simon Kimani, a local resident who witnessed the crash, described the chaotic scene, noting that despite the severity of the impact, the fuel tanker did not ignite. Survivors of the collision cried out for assistance, leading to the prompt arrival of law enforcement.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of road safety, particularly during adverse weather conditions. It underscores ongoing efforts to address the persistent issue of road accidents, which have claimed the lives of over 1,000 individuals in the country over the past three months.
