Dry Spell Expected Nationwide

The Kenya Meteorological Department has announced that most regions of the country will see dry conditions over the coming week.

Their latest forecast, issued on Tuesday, indicates that while the majority of Kenya will be sunny and dry, some areas will still receive light to moderate rain.

“Generally, sunny and dry weather is expected across most of Kenya. However, light to moderate showers are likely in the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and the Coast,” stated the Meteorological Department.

Certain areas, particularly in the Central Highlands, the central and southern Rift Valley, and the southeastern Lowlands, may experience cooler nighttime temperatures, dropping below 10°C.

Daytime temperatures are anticipated to be high, with some regions reaching over 30°C.

“Expect daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C in the South Rift Valley, Coast, Western, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya,” the report advised.

Previously, the Meteorological Department had warned that September would be unusually cool and rainy. In an interview with a local media, Director David Gikungu noted that this September’s weather deviates from the usual pattern, which typically allows for favorable outdoor conditions.

Gikungu attributed the current chilly weather to heavy rains in Ethiopia and the impacts of climate change. He explained that the heavy rainfall in Ethiopia has led to a shift in the sun’s position, which is now moving towards the Equator and causing cloud cover and rain in western Kenya.

“This cloud cover prevents intense sunlight from heating the area,” Gikungu added, noting that the changing climatic patterns are contributing to these unusual weather conditions.
