DPP Orders Ipoa Probe into Journalist Catherine Wanjeri Shooting

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Renson Ingonga, has instructed the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) to investigate the shooting incident involving journalist Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki.

Wanjeri, who works at Kameme FM and TV, was reportedly shot by police on July 16, 2024, while covering anti-government protests in Nakuru.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ingonga called upon the public to provide any relevant information regarding police conduct during protests. He emphasized the importance of witness statements in holding those responsible accountable.

Furthermore, Ingonga urged the public to refrain from spreading false information on social media, noting that such actions could prejudice the right to a fair trial.

In the aftermath of the incident, Wanjeri claimed she was deliberately targeted, citing a previous encounter where she was hit by a teargas canister. She shared that she had shown her colleagues the scar from that incident, which was on the same leg she was shot.

Wanjeri recounted leaving home to cover the protests, expecting to work and return safely, only to end up in the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds in her thigh.

While she has since recovered from the removal of the rubber bullets, journalists have planned protests to condemn the reported attacks on media personnel.
