Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has removed Professor Amukowa Anangwe from his position as the chairperson of the University of Nairobi (UON) Council.
The decision was made public in a Gazette Notice issued on February 21st, 2025.
Although Ogamba did not provide specific reasons for the revocation of Anangwe’s appointment, the notice stated: “IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 36 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012, in conjunction with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Education revokes the *appointment of— AMUKOWA ANANGWE (PROF.) as the Chairperson of the Council of the University of Nairobi, with effect from February 21st, 2025.”
This move is seen as setting the stage for a new appointment and comes amid ongoing leadership disputes at the university.
The Ministry of Education has been taking measures to address the leadership issues at UON, aiming to improve management and streamline operations.
In August of the previous year, the UON Council, under the leadership of Professor Anangwe, appointed Professor Margret Hutchinson as the acting Vice Chancellor after the suspension of Professor Stephen Kiama due to allegations of gross misconduct.
