Carrefour Turns Leftovers into Lifelines for Hungry Kenyans

Carrefour Kenya has entered into a partnership with Food Banking Kenya (FBK), part of the Global Food Banking Network, to help curb food waste and support vulnerable communities nationwide.

Through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the retailer will donate safe, surplus food — including baked goods collected daily and dry items like rice, cereals, and lentils delivered within four days — to verified charitable organizations.

The collaboration aligns with Majid Al Futtaim’s broader sustainability goals of reducing waste, promoting food security, and building inclusive communities.

“This partnership reinforces our dedication to responsible retail and community impact,” said Christophe Orcet, Regional Director for East Africa at Majid Al Futtaim Retail. “Much of the food that goes to waste is still safe to eat — by redistributing it, we’re supporting families in need and strengthening Kenya’s food security.”

Under the agreement, Carrefour will identify surplus food that meets strict safety and quality standards, while FBK will handle collection, sorting, and distribution through accredited charities.

FBK Executive Director John Gathungu said the initiative will extend the organization’s reach to ensure nutritious food gets to those most affected by hunger.

“This partnership shows how responsible retailing can transform surplus into meaningful support for communities,” he noted.

The collaboration is expected to redistribute around 20 tonnes of surplus food each year, benefiting thousands of families struggling with food insecurity while helping reduce environmental waste.
