A man lost his life while engaged in sand harvesting at Kyokong quarry in Bomet County after being buried alive beneath debris from loose rocks. The incident resulted in severe head and chest injuries, leading to the victim’s suffocation. Stanley Kosgei, an officer from the Bomet disaster unit, reported the tragic outcome. Fortunately, two other miners in a nearby cave escaped unharmed and sought assistance from local residents to rescue the trapped individual.
Responding to the incident, the police from Bomet Central police station visited the site, and the deceased’s body was transported to Longisa County Referral Hospital mortuary on Wednesday. In light of this unfortunate event, Erick Cheruiyot, the county officer in charge of devolution, urged miners to refrain from accessing the site until receiving guidance from the relevant authorities.
The incident underscores a recurring danger in the region, with five similar fatalities occurring in the recent past.
