Blogger Arrested for Questioning Politicians’ Wealth

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a 30-year-old man over online posts in which he questioned the source of wealth held by Kenya’s political class.

The suspect was accused of incitement and publishing false information after allegedly urging members of the public to take over property owned by politicians, claiming it was acquired through illegal means.

According to investigators, the posts were shared on X by Boniface Mulinge Muteti, who reportedly called on Kenyans to “arm themselves and prepare for a revolution,” remarks the DCI says are unlawful.

The posts further alleged that politicians had never been formally employed, innovated or invented anything, yet possessed vast wealth, which he claimed had been stolen from citizens.

On Monday, detectives from the Special Crime Unit (SCU) arraigned Muteti at the Milimani Law Courts, where he was charged with disseminating false information through his X account.

Police told the court that on December 6, 2025, Muteti—described as a blogger and human rights activist—published a provocative message under the username @mulinge_muteti_, suggesting that property linked to politicians should be taken and returned to the public.

Investigators said the publication was made knowingly and with the intention of inciting unrest, contrary to Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act of 2018.

Muteti denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh15,000 by Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina. The case will be mentioned on December 30, 2025, for pretrial directions.

The court also granted a request by the defence for the prosecution to supply witness lists and evidence ahead of the hearing.

Following the arrest, the DCI cautioned Kenyans to be mindful of their online activity, warning that sharing false or inflammatory content on social media is a criminal offence.
