In a statement, Kakamega Diocese Bishop Joseph Obanyi called on the faithful to keep the late bishop in their prayers as burial arrangements get underway.

“I ask all of you to remember him in your prayers and masses as we begin preparations for his burial. Details will be shared in due course,” said Bishop Obanyi.

“To all the people of God in Kakamega, relatives, and friends, we extend our condolences and assure you of our prayers during this difficult time,” he added.

Bishop Sulumeti’s death marks the end of an extraordinary spiritual journey that shaped Western Kenya’s religious and social fabric for nearly 50 years.

Born on August 15, 1937, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Kisumu on January 6, 1966. His leadership path began in 1972 when he was named Auxiliary Bishop of Kisumu and Titular Bishop of Urci, later being ordained on August 20 the same year.

In December 1976, he succeeded Bishop Joannes de Reeper as Bishop of Kisumu before being appointed the first Bishop of Kakamega on February 28, 1978 — a role he served with deep pastoral dedication.

Assuming leadership during a time of significant socio-economic challenges, Bishop Sulumeti became known for his humility, calm demeanor, and commitment to community development.

He prioritized education, advocating for Catholic-sponsored schools as a means of transforming society. Under his guidance, partnerships among teachers, parents, and leaders led to the expansion of learning institutions and improved academic standards.

He also promoted agricultural projects, self-help groups, and health initiatives, embracing a holistic vision of pastoral service.

A unifying figure, Bishop Sulumeti was admired for bringing together clergy, laity, and local communities while promoting peace, human dignity, and responsible governance.

After decades of dedicated service, he retired on December 5, 2014, leaving behind a lasting legacy of faith, development, and leadership.

The institutions he nurtured and the people he mentored continue to bear testimony to his life’s work.

The Diocese of Kakamega will announce funeral arrangements in the coming days.
