Asembo Residents Demand Arrest of Politician Linked to Killings

Residents of East Asembo ward are urging authorities to arrest and prosecute a politician they accuse of fueling violence that resulted in the deaths of two individuals at a gold mining site.

The residents claim that the fatalities could have been avoided if the politician had not organized a public meeting to discuss the operations of a new mining company in the area.

During demonstrations held at Kamalumbe village in North Ramba sub-location, Rarieda subcounty in Siaya, the residents called on the police to ensure that the politician faces legal action.

The fatal incident occurred when enraged villagers protested against a company’s operations in Rarieda, resulting in casualties and injuries. A Chinese national, brandishing a firearm to deter the villagers, hastily fled the scene.

Tensions escalated when youths, armed with mining tools, stormed the company’s premises during the politician’s public meeting, leading to violent clashes and hostage situations.

The villagers criticized the company for lack of engagement and transparency in setting up a gold processing plant, emphasizing their right to be informed about its activities and environmental safeguards.

The politician defended the legality of the meeting, stating that government and mining company officials were invited to provide clarity on their operations.

Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo announced a manhunt for the politician and revealed ongoing investigations into the conflicting interests among the mining investors.

Kimaiyo urged calm and advised stakeholders in the mining sector to seek assistance from relevant government agencies to address challenges.
