A group of activists staged a protest outside Pangani Police Station in Nairobi on Sunday, calling for the immediate release of Rose Njeri, a software developer and activist arrested on Friday in South B.

Led by well-known activists Boniface Mwangi and Hanifa Adan, along with Njeri’s family members, the demonstrators chanted slogans and sang liberation songs demanding her freedom.
In viral videos, the crowd chanted, “Tunadai nani? Tunadai Njeri! Tunataka nini? Tunataka Njeri!”
The demonstration followed an earlier post by Mwangi, who had announced plans to rally supporters at the station to pressure for her release.
Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, who visited Njeri before the protest, condemned the arrest, saying it violated her constitutional rights.
Njeri was detained for creating Civic Email, a platform that allows Kenyans to easily voice opposition to the proposed Finance Bill 2025. She explained on social media, “I built a simple tool to let people reject the Finance Bill 2025 with one click.”
Her arrest has sparked widespread criticism from legal and civil society circles, including statements from former Chief Justice David Maraga and the Law Society of Kenya, all demanding her immediate release.
The Finance Bill 2025, which Njeri’s tool opposes, proposes major tax changes — such as deductions for social health and housing contributions, a steep 20% tax on foreign digital firms, increased excise duties, and expanded KRA powers over personal financial data. Critics argue the bill threatens privacy and places heavy burdens on businesses and citizens.
