The forum’s goal was to promote mentorship, knowledge exchange, and relationship-building between industry experts and young women studying STEM-related courses at higher education institutions.

Gloria Wawira, CEO of the National Youth Council, encouraged young women to view STEM as a means to address real-world problems. She emphasized the importance of overcoming gender stereotypes that hinder access to STEM and called for increased mentorship and leadership support.

“Youth have the power to tackle some of the world’s most urgent issues,” she stated. “Whether it’s artificial intelligence, robotics, medicine, environmental sustainability, coding, or data analysis, STEM has a place for every passion and every talent.”

Harriet Chiggai, the President’s Advisor on Women’s Rights, highlighted the need for greater inclusion of youth and women in STEM, emphasizing the role of public-private partnerships in promoting gender equality and innovation.

During the event, speakers also discussed initiatives like the Huawei ICT Competition, DigiTruck, and University Career Fair Platforms, designed to inspire more young women to enter the tech industry.

Nearly 3,000 students participated in this year’s Huawei ICT Competition, with around 960 (32 percent) of them being girls.

Five girls have qualified for the Regional Finals in South Africa, scheduled for March 2025.
