Mombasa Port Welcomes Cruise Ship MV Bolette with Over 800 Tourists, Boosting Coastal Tourism

The tourism sector along the coast experienced a significant upswing as the cruise ship MV Bolette, carrying 859 tourists, docked at the port of Mombasa on Thursday morning. This marks the sixth cruise ship to arrive at the port this season and the last one for the current season.

A portion of the tourists embarked on diverse travel expeditions, with some heading to destinations such as Shimba Hills, Tsavo, Diani, while others chose to explore Mombasa city.

Speaking to the media after receiving the tourists at the Kenya Ports Authority Cruise terminal in Mombasa, the Acting CEO of the Kenya Tourism Board, John Chirchir, highlighted the opportunity for collaboration among the six coastal counties to capitalize on the cruise ship tourism sector.

Chirchir mentioned that the Kenya Tourism Board is actively working to revive cruise tourism in Kenya, with ongoing campaigns aimed at attracting more vessels. He revealed that about 13 ships are expected to arrive by April next year.

Dr. Sudi Mwasinago, the KPA General Manager Cargo Operations, emphasized the pivotal role of the port in revitalizing the cruise ship business in Kenya, stating that the port serves as the interface between land and sea for these vessels. He highlighted the positive impact of cruise arrivals on the port’s revenue and the broader economy.

Mombasa county’s executive for trade, tourism, and culture, Mohammed Osman, welcomed the cruise ship, expressing confidence that Mombasa remains a preferred tourist destination for both local and international visitors. Osman emphasized the county government’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to position Mombasa as the leading tourist destination in Kenya.

The MV Bolette, belonging to Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines, arrived from Port Victoria in the Seychelles with passengers of various nationalities and 1000 crew members. After an overnight stay in Mombasa, the cruise ship is set to continue its Indian Ocean voyage, heading to Zanzibar.
