Police in Nairobi have arrested a man who was carrying a dismembered body in a backpack, suspected to be that of his 19-year-old wife.
Officers encountered 29-year-old John Kiama Wambua while on patrol in Huruma, Nairobi’s eastern district, before dawn.
A statement from the Kenyan Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says the police suspected Wambua of carrying something illegal, searched his bag and “shocked” found body parts.
After police officers questioned Wambua, he told them the body parts belonged to his wife, Joy Fridah Munani.
After being questioned, Wambua led the officers to his home, where they discovered a knife, blood-soaked clothes and other body parts under the bed.
The DCI report states that the suspect will be formally charged with murder in court.
Kenya is one of the countries with the highest rate of femicide in Africa.
Between August and October last year, at least 97 women were murdered, according to Kenyan Police.
In December, hundreds of women protested against a wave of femicide in the streets of the capital, Nairobi.
