Five Killed in Migori Lorry-Motorcycle Collision

Five individuals lost their lives instantly in an accident involving a lorry and two motorcycles at Nyametembe Bridge in Migori County along the Migori-Isebania highway on Sunday night.

Among the victims were two teachers.

According to eyewitnesses, the lorry driver, who was speeding, lost control and collided with two motorcycles carrying pillion passengers, killing the riders and their passengers at around 7:55 p.m.

Kuria West Sub County Police Commander Reuben Bett reported that two riders and three pillion passengers died, while the lorry driver, who sustained injuries, is currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

Bett explained that the lorry, which was transporting maize from Isebania to Migori, veered off course and struck the two motorcycles traveling in the opposite direction.

The police are still investigating the cause of the crash, according to the Sub County Police Commander.

Residents of Nyametembe expressed concern over the frequent accidents at the bridge, which has become a known accident hotspot. Richard Chacha, a local resident, mentioned that there had been about four accidents in the area within the past year.

Chacha suggested that the road, which is very narrow, should be widened to help reduce accidents. His concerns were supported by Serine Boke and Dancan Nyange, who called for the installation of speed bumps in the area by the Kenya National Highways Authority.
