Five individuals perished following a collapse at a gold mine in Rongo, Migori County, as rescue operations persist.

The incident occurred at the Kanga gold mine on Tuesday evening.

Initial reports indicated 18 miners were inside during the collapse, and efforts are ongoing to verify the status of all individuals affected.

Otenga stated that some miners reportedly escaped through alternate routes, and authorities are actively locating and accounting for them to determine if the remaining 13 miners survived.

He praised the collaborative efforts of stakeholders in the late-night rescue operation, which successfully located miners within the 750-foot deep mining shaft.

The commissioner emphasized the importance of miners taking precautions during gold prospecting to prevent fatalities and injuries, noting a lack of adequate safety measures observed in Migori County’s gold mining sector.
