Ruto Condemns Asset Seizures Over Ukraine Conflict

President Ruto criticized the EU and the US for seizing Russian assets in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine during his speech at the Ukraine Peace Summit in Burgenstock, Switzerland on Saturday, June 15, 2024.

He argued that such actions were contrary to the principles of the United Nations.

Ruto stressed that retaliatory measures like capturing Russian investments were unjust and violated the UN Charter. He emphasized the importance of upholding principles of freedom, justice, and democracy, cautioning against unilateral actions that undermine multilateralism.

He highlighted the extensive financial impact of these measures, citing figures from the US Treasury and the EU on frozen Russian assets. President Ruto underscored the need for international unity and adherence to diplomatic norms to achieve peace.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine initiated the summit to garner global support for peace efforts in his country, which President Ruto supported in his remarks.

Ruto also expressed concern over the wider repercussions of the conflict, such as economic effects felt even in rural Kenya.

Regarding the UN Security Council’s role, President Ruto criticized its inability to effectively address conflicts like the one in Ukraine, underscoring the need for global peace infrastructure reform.

French President Emmanuel Macron, also present at the summit, assured that Western nations were not in a state of war with Russia.
