Senate Calls Special Session on 2024 Finance Bill

The Senate has scheduled a special session for Tuesday to deliberate on the controversial 2024 Finance Bill.

The National Assembly Committee on Finance is conducting its final public consultation on the bill at the KICC on Monday.

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot has called for the special session to address contentious issues in the bill, according to Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei. Pressure is mounting on parliamentarians to reject the bill, with the Anglican Church urging them to discard proposals that would further burden Kenyan citizens.

Archbishop Sapit emphasized the need for taxation that supports government initiatives without exacerbating the cost of living or business. The allocation of resources, a divisive topic, is tied to the bill, with different factions advocating for various revenue-sharing formulas.

DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa advocates for respecting Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s stance on the ‘one man, one vote, one shilling’ formula, while Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot asserts that the decision lies with the Senate.

Wamalwa stresses the importance of open dialogue on the issue, free from threats, intimidation, or the marginalization of any community or individual.
