Matatu Operators Warn of Transport Disruption in Nairobi

Nairobi’s matatu operators are threatening to disrupt transport services in response to feeling excluded from a city renovation initiative that directly impacts their business operations.

These operators argue that the sudden road construction projects in various terminals across the city are causing significant disruptions to their operations and are adversely affecting their businesses.

According to Jairus Okatsa, the representative for the matatu operators, they perceive the Nairobi County government’s actions as a violation of constitutional requirements, particularly regarding public participation in the implementation of the city renovation program, resulting in financial losses for their members.

The operators highlight that the road construction projects, particularly along Tom Mboya, from Koja to Haile Selassie, River Road, Latema Road, and Acra Road, are impacting the terminals where most matatu operations are based.

In response, they are calling for the Nairobi County government to engage them in the planning and execution stages of the development process.
