In a bid to enhance accessibility and affordability of fertilizer for local farmers, the Nakuru County government has inaugurated additional stores strategically located across various wards. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden and logistical challenges faced by farmers in acquiring agricultural inputs.
Leonard Bor, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, announced the operationalization of seven new stores during an event held at the Rongai Social Hall. The occasion also marked the delivery of 1140 bags of subsidized fertilizer to the region.
The newly established satellite stores, situated in Tinet, Kabazi, Keringet, Kiptororo, Subukia, Kiambogo, and Rongai wards, are set to complement the existing network of National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots. This expansion aims to streamline the distribution process, ensuring that farmers have convenient access to agricultural inputs ahead of the upcoming planting season.
With the onset of the long rains expected next month, farmers are gearing up for cultivation activities. The availability of subsidized fertilizer at closer proximity is poised to facilitate timely preparation and enhance agricultural productivity in the region.
This initiative aligns with the national government’s Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which prioritizes interventions to address economic challenges and bolster food security across the country. Recognizing the exorbitant costs associated with food imports, the government has underscored the importance of supporting small-scale farmers through initiatives such as subsidized fertilizers.
By reducing the reliance on costly imports, the government aims to curtail food importation expenses by a significant margin, from the current $500 million to $300 million. Such measures not only empower local farmers but also contribute to the overarching goal of fostering self-sufficiency in food production within the country.
The inauguration of these satellite stores signals a concerted effort by both the national and county governments to fortify the agricultural sector and uplift the livelihoods of rural communities. As farmers gear up for the planting season, the expanded access to subsidized fertilizer serves as a testament to ongoing efforts to promote sustainable agricultural practices and stimulate economic growth at the grassroots level.
