The Origin of Senator Eddy Oketch’s Middle Name, ‘Gicheru’.

Hailing from Migori County, predominantly inhabited by the Luo and Kuria communities, Oketch recounted his upbringing in Uriri village until 2003 when his mother passed away.

Reflecting on the challenges his family faced after his mother’s death, particularly as tobacco farmers in the area, Oketch shared that their circumstances compelled him to temporarily halt his education and seek opportunities in Migori town.

Subsequently, he found himself in Nairobi’s streets, where he lived with several foster families who supported his education.

Grateful for the assistance he received, Oketch highlighted the pivotal role of the Gicheru family in his journey. They provided him with the support needed to resume his schooling and ultimately shape his future.

In recognition of their significant contribution to his life, Oketch decided to incorporate the Gicheru surname into his own, honoring their role in his development.
