Migori Senator Eddy Oketch asserts that Raila Odinga does not require support from the Kenya Kwanza administration to secure the position of African Union Commission chairperson.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s Daybreak on Thursday, Oketch emphasized that Raila’s extensive networks and respected reputation as sufficient qualifications for the role. In comparison to President William Ruto, Oketch contends that Raila holds a superior standing on the continental stage, both diplomatically and politically.
He suggests that rumors of government endorsement for Raila’s AU candidacy are merely a tactic to deter his advocacy for Kenyan interests. Furthermore, Oketch notes that Raila has not publicly declared his candidacy and describes him as a leader who engages in consultation.
These statements from Senator Oketch coincide with reports indicating President Ruto’s purported backing of Raila for the AU position, potentially reshaping Kenya’s political dynamics and removing Raila from future presidential contests.
The AU chairmanship, a prestigious role with significant global influence, necessitates neutrality in continental political affairs.
