Namibia’s President Hage Geingob, aged 82, passed away in the early hours of Sunday in a hospital, according to an announcement from the presidency.
This comes a few weeks after he received a cancer diagnosis. The statement on social media did not specify the exact cause of death, but earlier, it was disclosed that he would seek treatment in the United States after the diagnosis was made during a routine medical examination.
Geingob passed away at Lady Pohamba Hospital in Windhoek, where he was under the care of his medical team, as per the presidency’s communication.
Having previously disclosed his battle with prostate cancer while serving as prime minister in 2014, he assumed the presidency the following year.
Namibia, situated in southern Africa, is slated to conduct presidential and parliamentary elections towards the end of this year.
