Doctors in Kitui County have issued a 14-day strike notice, raising concerns about an imminent health crisis in the region.
The notice, scheduled to expire on February 7, 2024, was announced following a meeting between the doctors and representatives from the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU).
During the meeting, doctors expressed frustration over what they described as ongoing labor exploitation issues. They highlighted persistent staff shortages, burnout, lack of career progression, demotivation, stagnant job promotions, and years of denied postgraduate study leaves as some of the key challenges they face.
Accusing the county government of failing to fulfill promises to address their grievances, the doctors vowed to cease their services at the end of the strike notice if their demands remain unmet.
Dr. Davji Atellah, the Secretary General of KMPDU, emphasized the need to end the mistreatment of doctors, stressing that adherence to the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and labor laws is essential.
He urged solidarity among doctors in upholding the dignity of their profession and resisting all forms of labor injustices.
