WhatsApp Finally Solves a Common Group Chat Problem

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that enables users to share recent group chat history with newly added members, helping them catch up on previous discussions without relying on other participants for updates.

The feature is currently available to a limited number of users as part of a gradual rollout. In a notice on its Help Center, WhatsApp advised users to keep their app updated to access the feature once it becomes widely available.

According to the company, the tool is still under development and testing.

With the new option, users can share all pinned messages in a group along with up to 100 of the most recent messages whenever a new member joins. This is intended to give new participants enough context to follow ongoing conversations from the moment they are added.

To use the feature, users can open the group chat, tap the group name, select Add, choose the contact they want to invite, enable the Message history option, decide how many recent messages to share, and then complete the process by tapping Add members followed by Continue.

After the history has been shared, the new member will receive a notification indicating that previous messages have been sent. Existing group members will also see a notification confirming that the chat history was shared with the newly added participant.

Group administrators will have the ability to control the feature through the group settings. By accessing the group permissions menu, admins can enable or disable the message history sharing option. When the setting is turned off, members will not be able to send previous conversations to new participants.

The feature is expected to be especially useful for workplace teams, school groups, community organisations and family chats where conversations span long periods. It will allow new members to quickly understand the discussion without repeatedly asking others for summaries.

WhatsApp has not revealed when the feature will be available worldwide, but says it will continue expanding access as testing progresses.
