Tears Flow as Utumishi Fire Victim Laid to Rest in Ruai

Emotions ran high on Wednesday as Neema Wairimu Murigi, the last student victim of the tragic Utumishi Girls’ Academy fire, was laid to rest at her family home in Ruai, Nairobi.

Family members, friends, and fellow students gathered to bid her farewell, with many overcome by grief as they reflected on her life and shared heartfelt memories.

Her parents, siblings, and classmates were visibly distraught as they paid tribute, marking another painful moment in the aftermath of the school fire tragedy.

Neema’s parents described her as their second-born daughter and a source of joy and blessing within the family. They remembered her as a bright, loving, and compassionate young woman whose sudden passing has left a deep void.

Her father, Gabriel Murigi Ngugi, expressed gratitude for the time they shared, saying: “We thank you for the beautiful moments and precious memories we shared with you…”

Her sisters, Stellah and Abby, struggled to hold back tears as they delivered emotional tributes, recalling their close bond and cherished moments with Neema. They described her as hardworking, determined, and an outstanding performer, while also expressing the pain of losing her.

Students from Utumishi Girls Academy also turned out in large numbers to honor their classmate, many visibly emotional as they remembered her kindness, warmth, and vibrant personality.

Friends paid touching tributes, describing her as more than just a friend. Tabitha Chepkemoi said, “Neema you were more than a friend… more than a sister…,” while Wendy Moraa added, “You are no longer physically with us but your memories live with us forever…”

Following the requiem service, Neema’s body was taken to her family home in Ruai for burial, bringing a heartbreaking chapter to a close for her loved ones.

Her burial comes nearly a month after the devastating fire at Utumishi Girls Academy on May 27, which left families, students, and the wider community in deep mourning.
