A U.S. national facing immigration-related charges in Nairobi caused a light moment in court on Thursday after complaining about the food served in custody and asking for “better meals.”
The Milimani Law Courts briefly turned humorous when Hodgkinson Enock Jedidah, who is accused of being in Kenya illegally, told the magistrate he was dissatisfied with the standard prison diet of ugali and cabbage.

Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Mutai, Jedidah said he was unhappy with the meals provided to remandees and requested more suitable food.
“I should be given good food… ugali and cabbage… is that what you are saying should happen? No, I don’t think so,” he said, prompting laughter in the courtroom.
He further argued that he did not like the taste of ugali and cabbage and asked the court to ensure he is provided with better and more filling meals while in custody.
However, the magistrate declined to intervene, advising him to accept the meals provided by the facility.

Jedidah had earlier pleaded not guilty to charges of being in Kenya without valid immigration documents. He claimed that his travel papers had been confiscated by immigration officials, preventing him from regularising his stay.

The prosecution opposed his claims, stating that he had overstayed his permitted period in the country and was therefore residing in Kenya unlawfully.
The court ordered that he be remanded at Industrial Area Prison as the case continues.
