Nyandarua Senator John Methu has insisted that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua must be on the presidential ballot in the 2027 General Election, arguing that he remains the opposition’s strongest challenger against President William Ruto.
Speaking during Gachagua’s visit to the United Kingdom, Methu described him as the “engine” of the opposition, saying he should return to Kenya soon to help rally support against the current administration.

He claimed that Gachagua should not remain abroad for long, adding that his presence was crucial for opposition mobilisation ahead of the next election.
Methu also expressed support for opposition unity, but argued that leadership should naturally go to the candidate with the strongest voter base.
He claimed Gachagua has a significantly larger support base compared to other opposition figures, suggesting he should lead any coalition’s presidential bid.
The senator dismissed arguments that Gachagua’s impeachment bars him from contesting, saying he still has legal options to challenge the decision in court and remains eligible unless all remedies are exhausted.
He further insisted that attempts to rule out Gachagua from the race are politically motivated and aimed at weakening his support base.
Meanwhile, Gachagua is currently in London on a political and diaspora engagement tour aimed at strengthening support among Kenyans living abroad.

His itinerary includes a cultural event featuring Kenyan artists as well as a reception welcoming him to the UK.
The visit is part of a broader strategy by opposition leaders to engage the diaspora, a group seen as small in voter numbers but influential in resources and political influence.
Gachagua’s UK trip follows an earlier six-week tour of the United States, where he held meetings and political rallies aimed at boosting his 2027 presidential ambitions and building opposition momentum against the Ruto administration.
