Mali’s President Goïta Appoints Himself as Minister of Defense

Mali’s military leader, Major General Assimi Goïta, has appointed himself Minister of Defense, adding the position to his current position as interim President.

The move follows the killing of former Defense Minister Sadio Camara in a coordinated attack by JNIM fighters and Tuareg FLA rebels. Camara was instrumental in strengthening military cooperation with Russia, so his death is a major blow to the Malian military.

As Minister of Defense, Goïta, who took power through a military coup, will now directly lead the security forces, assisted by the country’s Chief of Staff, General Oumar Diarra, who has been appointed Deputy Minister of Defense.

Mali is currently facing a significant increase in attacks and the loss of several areas to militant groups.

Goïta came to power in 2020 with the rank of colonel, before rising to general within four years.

Analysts criticize him, saying he has failed to fulfill his promise to restore security despite military support from Moscow.
