A Nairobi court has acquitted former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko of money laundering charges after finding that the prosecution did not present enough evidence to support the allegation.

Despite this ruling, Sonko was not fully cleared, as the court determined that he still has a case to answer on other charges linked to the irregular awarding of tenders during his time at City Hall.
In its decision, the court stated that after reviewing submissions from both the prosecution and the defence, it was dismissing the money laundering charge but requiring the accused to defend himself on the remaining counts.
Prosecutors claim the tendering process was manipulated, leading to the незакон awarding of contracts and potential loss of public funds. As a result, the case will proceed, with Sonko expected to respond to the outstanding charges.
The decision marks a partial win for the former governor, who has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and insists the case against him is politically driven.
Earlier, in January 2025, a magistrate had ruled that Sonko had a case to answer in a separate matter involving 11 charges tied to a Ksh20 million revenue tender at City Hall, including allegations of money laundering.

Sonko has told the court that his prosecution was orchestrated by influential figures opposed to his stance against illegal land grabbing, particularly involving public school property.

He further alleged that during his tenure, powerful individuals attempted to bribe senior county officials with up to Ksh5 million each to facilitate such schemes.
Sonko’s legal troubles date back to 2019 when he was arrested over a Ksh357 million corruption case involving irregular payments and alleged money laundering.
