Senior Police Officer Killed in Head-On Collision Along Machakos–Kitui Road

A senior police officer has died following a fatal road accident involving her vehicle and a lorry along the Machakos–Kitui road in Mwala Sub-County, Machakos County.

The crash occurred at around 11 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, in the King’atwani area.

The deceased has been identified as Inspector Felistus Kateve Mbaluka, the officer commanding Makutano Police Patrol Base in Mwala Sub-County.

According to police, Inspector Mbaluka was driving a Toyota Vitz from Machakos towards Kitui when her vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming Isuzu FRR lorry.

She suffered severe injuries, including multiple fractures to her legs, arms and neck. She was rushed to Tumaini Private Hospital in Masii for emergency treatment but later succumbed to her injuries.

Her body was transferred to Montezuma Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

The lorry driver survived the collision, while investigators have launched inquiries to determine the cause of the crash.

Police said the incident was among 10 fatal road accidents recorded across the country on Sunday night, underscoring growing concerns over the rising number of deadly crashes despite ongoing road safety campaigns.

Senior officer arrested over Nakuru bar shooting

In a separate incident, police have arrested a senior officer accused of shooting a 56-year-old man during an altercation inside a bar at Githioro Trading Centre in Nakuru North Sub-County.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 2.30 p.m. on Sunday after the two became involved in a disagreement over circumstances that are still under investigation.

The injured man was assisted by members of the public to Githioro Police Station, where the matter was reported before he received first aid at Wysley Mission Hospital. He was later transferred to Nakuru Provincial General Hospital, where he remains admitted in stable condition.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the officer allegedly drew his issued Duma pistol and fired a single shot, hitting the victim in the right ankle. Police said the bullet entered through one side of the ankle and exited through the other.

Following the shooting, the officer reportedly surrendered the firearm together with a spent 9mm cartridge to the station. The pistol contained 13 rounds of ammunition.

Investigators established that the officer had officially been issued the firearm with 15 rounds on June 26, leaving one round still unaccounted for. Detectives are searching both the scene and the officer’s residence as part of ongoing investigations.

The firearm, magazine and recovered cartridge have since been handed over for forensic examination, while the officer remains in police custody pending the outcome of investigations.
