President William Ruto on Thursday injected humor into an official State House event after poking fun at how some leaders were dressed.
While speaking during the signing of the agreement for the Modern Arena and Entertainment District in Nairobi, Ruto joked that a number of attendees appeared unprepared for the formal setting.

He said he found himself wondering whether some guests, including Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, had intended to attend the function or had just ended up there unexpectedly, drawing laughter from the audience.
Ruto quipped that their outfits didn’t reflect the seriousness of a State House event, adding—still in a lighthearted tone—that in future, those not properly dressed might be turned away at the gate.
Among those present, Sakaja stood out in a smart-casual look—a patterned long-sleeved shirt without a tie and trousers—mirroring the more relaxed style adopted by several attendees. Many guests opted for open-collar shirts and lighter fabrics, with fewer suits and ties than is typical at such high-level functions.
The contrast between the casual dress code and the usually formal State House environment was noticeable, though the mood remained upbeat throughout.

The event marked progress in plans to establish a modern arena and entertainment district in Nairobi, a project aimed at enhancing the city’s status as a regional hub for sports, culture, and entertainment.

Ruto’s remarks provided a moment of levity while subtly reinforcing expectations around official dress codes, highlighting the balance between evolving fashion trends and longstanding protocol at State House functions.
