At least 33 bodies have been exhumed from a mass grave at a cemetery in Kericho County, following an operation carried out by a multi-agency team on Tuesday.
Initial reports had indicated that only 14 bodies were buried at the site, but the latest findings revealed a significantly higher number. Among the remains recovered were 25 children, alongside six dismembered body parts.

Officials noted that the remains were in different stages of decomposition, suggesting they were buried at different times and possibly originated from various sources, including health facilities and mortuaries.
The exercise was overseen by Director of Homicide Martin Nyuguto, together with a government pathologist representing Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor.
Preliminary findings indicate that eight of the bodies belong to adults, while the majority are children. All remains have been moved to a mortuary for detailed forensic analysis aimed at determining causes of death and identifying the victims.
Authorities are also investigating whether any criminal activity may have occurred beyond possible irregularities in the burial process.

On March 23, 2026, two suspects were presented before a court in Kericho, where investigators sought orders to allow continued exhumation and custody of the suspects.
The court granted a 30-day period for authorities to proceed with exhumations and further forensic examinations as investigations continue into the identities of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
