ODM party leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has condemned the teargas incident that disrupted a rally in Kitengela attended by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna last weekend.
Speaking in the Senate on Wednesday, Oburu termed the incident unconstitutional and called for a comprehensive police investigation, urging that those responsible be held accountable.

He emphasized the need for calm and respect for the rule of law, warning that such occurrences could derail ongoing political and governance commitments.
“I did not like what happened in Kitengela when people were teargassed at a rally. I hope the police will investigate thoroughly and ensure the culprits are punished, especially as we implement the 10-point agenda,” he said.
The rally, organized under Sifuna’s Linda Wananchi movement, was cut short after teargas was thrown into the crowd. Earlier in the day, organizers claimed their dais and sound equipment had been destroyed. Despite the disruption, Sifuna thanked supporters for turning up, alleging harassment and intimidation.
The Kitengela event followed his earlier rally in Busia, which also drew significant attendance. Sifuna said the growing support encouraged him, noting that even if he were sidelined, others would continue the mission.
Sifuna, who was removed as ODM Secretary General before being reinstated by the Political Parties Tribunal, has had disagreements with party leader Oburu and now leads a faction within the party. Embakasi East MP Babu Owino backed the Linda Wananchi team, saying they may lack control of the party structure but have grassroots support.
The divisions come amid uncertainty over ODM’s direction following the death of Raila Odinga.
Opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka also criticised the Kitengela incident, describing it as state-sponsored repression. He lamented what he termed the denial of justice and condemned the police for failing to present a report on a separate teargas incident at ACK Witima Church involving former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Kalonzo said the absence of the Inspector General of Police and his team, despite formal notification, signaled avoidance of accountability and disregard for public duty.
