The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the death of a defilement suspect who was discovered dead in police cells in Nyeri.
Police identified the deceased as 47-year-old Lawrence Wangai, who was found in the bathroom area of the cells on the afternoon of February 15, 2026. Authorities said IPOA was notified immediately and has begun probing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

At the time, 14 other suspects were being held at the facility. The motive behind the incident has not been established.
According to police, Wangai had asked to be escorted to the washroom to bathe and turned on the tap, leaving the water running. When he failed to return, the officer on duty reportedly called out to him but received no response, prompting entry into the bathroom.
Officers said the suspect was found unresponsive, having allegedly used a jacket string tied to the toilet grills. The scene was documented in the presence of IPOA officials, and the body was taken to a mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
IPOA is legally mandated to investigate deaths occurring in police custody and has previously faulted officers in similar cases.

In a separate incident, police in Githurai Mwiki, Kiambu County, are probing the death of a 25-year-old man who was electrocuted while fixing a television aerial on his rented balcony.
Authorities said Julius Gitau reportedly came into contact with a live electric wire and was thrown from the second floor onto the road below. He sustained severe head injuries and burns to his hand and abdomen and was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.
Detectives visited the scene as investigations continue. Officials have linked such cases to illegal power connections and the use of unqualified technicians, noting a rise in electrocution incidents in both urban and rural areas.
Elsewhere in Karungu, Migori County, police are investigating after nine cows were found with deep cuts on their tails following an attack by unknown individuals. The livestock owner reported the matter, and a veterinary officer treated the animals as inquiries into the Sunday incident continue.
