Family Reveals Jirongo’s Final Resting Place and Date

Former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo will be buried on December 30, 2025, at his Lumakanda home, next to his parents’ graves, the family has confirmed.

Announcing the arrangements on behalf of the burial committee, former Vihiga Senator George Khaniri said the family reached the decision after consultations, noting that Jirongo owned several homes, which initially raised questions about the burial site.

“We have agreed on the burial date, tentatively set for December 30, 2025. Because he had multiple homes, there was uncertainty over where he would be laid to rest,” Khaniri said.

He added that the family resolved to bury the former legislator at his Lumakanda residence alongside his father and mother.

Jirongo died on Saturday, December 13, following a road accident in the Karai area of Naivasha, Nakuru County. The 64-year-old was driving his private vehicle along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway when it collided head-on with a passenger bus.

Rift Valley Traffic Enforcement Officer Sarah Chumo said the crash occurred at about 3:00 a.m. as Jirongo was travelling from Nakuru towards Nairobi.

Tributes have continued to pour in from leaders and political allies, who have remembered him for his long political career as well as his generosity and dedication to uplifting others.

Scenes of grief were witnessed at his home, with emotional relatives gathering as they struggled to come to terms with the loss. One female relative said the death was devastating, especially coming during the festive season when the family had expected to celebrate together.

Jirongo began his political career as Lugari MP under the Kanu party from 1997 to 2002. He later founded the Kenya African Democratic Development Union (KADDU) in 2006 and reclaimed the Lugari seat in the 2007 General Election, serving until 2013.

He unsuccessfully contested the Kakamega Senate seat in 2013, made a presidential bid in 2017 under the United Democratic Party, and later vied for the Kakamega governorship in 2022, where he lost to ODM’s Fernandes Barasa.
