Kalonzo: Kenya Entering a ‘Revolutionary’ Political Phase

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has cautioned that Kenya is moving into what he termed a “revolutionary mode,” warning that the 2027 General Election will be far from ordinary if current political and governance trends continue.

Speaking at the Lower Eastern Advocates Forum end-of-year event in Machakos on Saturday, December 6, Kalonzo urged legal professionals to step up in defending democracy, constitutionalism, and the rule of law.

The event, attended by judges, magistrates, advocates, and Governors Wavinya Ndeti and Mutula Kilonzo Junior, ran from 6pm into the early hours of the morning.

Kalonzo argued that recent by-elections—citing Mbeere North and Malava—did not reflect genuine democratic competition. He warned lawyers to remain alert to what he called political manipulation.

He also claimed that during recent polls, some police officers worked alongside groups he described as “goons” instead of enforcing the law, saying such conduct threatens free and fair elections and discourages credible aspirants.

Kalonzo urged advocates to be more vocal in safeguarding constitutional order, suggesting that Kenya could benefit from having a lawyer as president. He also called for the appointment of more judges to address the backlog of court cases and restore public confidence in the judiciary.

He applauded past legal challenges taken up pro bono, including opposition to the proposed privatisation of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and criticised what he said were government plans to sell Safaricom. He questioned why one of Kenya’s most profitable firms should be put on sale.

Kalonzo also praised the legal fraternity for consistently defending the Constitution amid concerns over corruption and democratic backsliding. He welcomed a recent High Court ruling on political defections involving Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo and his deputy, saying it reaffirmed the importance of respecting the voter’s will.

“The will of the voter is sacred,” he concluded, urging leaders to honour the choices made by Kenyans.
