In the widely circulated video on January 3, Ogema, accompanied by an unidentified man, was seen verbally and physically abusing hospital staff. The footage showed her causing chaos by tossing files on the floor, banging on a table, and shouting at the hospital personnel.
The incident provoked public outrage, with calls for appropriate legal action against Ogema. Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Davji Atellah condemned the behavior, emphasizing the need for legal consequences.
“This is rudimentary, illegal, and immoral. The attitude and action by politicians and their cronies to threaten healthcare workers at their place of work should be curtailed,” Atellah stated. “The safety of healthcare workers is threatened in such facilities. The perpetrators of this heinous act should be brought to book urgently.”
As a result of the incident, hospital staff went on strike on January 5, leading families to transfer their patients to other facilities. The Busia County government, in a statement to the media, highlighted the destruction of hospital property during the incident, including an oxygen concentrator.
