Moses Wetangula, the Speaker of the National Assembly, has been re-elected to represent the African bloc in the standing committee of the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC).
The appointment took place during a conference held in Kampala, Uganda, where Wetangula was chosen by consensus to serve a second term as one of the three representatives in the CSPOC Standing Committee.
The other two representatives are the Speakers of Ghana and the Kingdom of Eswatini. Wetangula delivered a keynote speech during the meeting, emphasizing his commitment to climate change issues. He highlighted the critical importance of safeguarding natural resources to maintain a balanced ecosystem naturally.
“As parliaments, we have the power of legislation. Our parliaments, therefore, need to keep pace with the fast-transforming world where the philosophy of green competition is gaining traction and will determine future growth and development,” remarked Wetangula.
Senate counterpart Amason Kingi also attended the conference. The Speaker of Uganda automatically retained the Chair position as the host of the conference, following the rules of CSPOC, ensuring continuity and institutional memory.
The conference was presided over by Uganda President Yoweri Museveni. The Standing Committee of the CSPOC is tasked with proposing draft agendas for upcoming discussions, reviewing standing rules, addressing financial matters, and deciding dates, venues, and procedures for subsequent conferences.
