Former Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete has arrived in Nairobi ahead of the State Funeral of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, set to take place on Saturday at Nyayo National Stadium.
Kikwete, who played a key role in mediating Kenya’s 2007–2008 post-election crisis, was instrumental in brokering the peace deal that led to the formation of the Grand Coalition Government between President Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga.

The former Tanzanian leader was received by former Vice President Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, who welcomed him on behalf of the Kenyan government and Raila’s family.

Dr. Musyoka had been on a 10-day official trip to the United Kingdom but cut short his visit following the sudden death of Raila Odinga earlier this week.

Speaking at the airport, Musyoka described Kikwete’s visit as “a powerful gesture of solidarity and friendship,” noting that the former Tanzanian president’s presence reflects the deep bond between Kenya and Tanzania.
“President Kikwete was part of a historic moment in Kenya’s political journey. His coming to bid farewell to Raila Odinga shows how much respect and admiration the region holds for Baba,” Musyoka said.
Kikwete is expected to join several African heads of state and international dignitaries attending Raila’s State Funeral, where thousands of mourners are anticipated to gather in a final farewell to the longtime opposition leader.

Raila’s body lies in state at Parliament Buildings in Nairobi, where thousands of Kenyans have continued to stream in to pay their last respects ahead of the national ceremony.
