Though rare, cases of genital amputation have been documented in Kenya. In January 2019, specialists at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) successfully reattached the penis of a Form Three student after it was cut off at the base using a kitchen knife. The seven-hour operation, led by a 15-member multidisciplinary team, restored the boy’s urinary function and partial erectile ability.
Medical experts stress that for reattachment to succeed, the amputated organ must be properly preserved, transported under sterile and cool conditions, and surgery performed swiftly—ideally within six hours to avoid irreversible tissue damage. Such delicate procedures require highly skilled urologists, plastic surgeons, and microsurgical teams.
According to research published on ScienceDirect, microsurgical replantation is the gold standard for penile amputations. It involves reconnecting arteries, veins, and nerves to restore blood circulation, sensation, urinary flow, and sexual function. Compared to conventional repair methods, microsurgical techniques yield better outcomes and fewer complications such as necrosis, erectile dysfunction, or urethral strictures.

Although not all hospitals in Kenya are equipped with the tools and expertise for such complex procedures, documented cases—including the 2019 KNH surgery—demonstrate that successful reattachment is possible, giving patients a chance at functional recovery and psychological healing.
