Bomet Governor Hillary Kipng’eno Barchok and former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati appeared before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on Tuesday to face corruption-related charges.
The two were escorted to court under heavy police security early in the morning and briefly held in custody before their arraignment.
They were joined by several other accused individuals, who investigators claim were involved in the questionable financial transactions under investigation.
Following initial processing, Barchok, Wangamati, and their co-accused were taken before the Anti-Corruption Court to respond to charges formally filed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
The case follows investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) into alleged irregularities in county government activities.
The ODPP has stated that the investigations uncovered suspected procurement fraud, conflict of interest, and misuse of public resources during their time in office.
Governor Barchok faces allegations of conflict of interest and the illegal acquisition of public assets, while Wangamati is accused of conflict of interest tied to questionable payments made through companies linked to him and his associates.
The case will proceed at the Anti-Corruption Court, where the accused are expected to enter their pleas.
